Figurative Language, Diction and Tone
Diction; Pg. 1-35- "Aunt Helen told my father not to hit me in front of her ever again and my father said this was his house and he would do what he wanted..." (Chbosky, 5) I chose this as a strong statement because it showed how much Charlie's aunt Helen cared about him and how his dad makes his own rules for always.
Pg. 36-70- "My dad is not a big drinker at all, but when he has to spend time with my mom's family, he gets 'loaded'..." (Chbosky, 57) I chose this as a strong statement because since Charlie's dad doesn't normally drink unless he's around his wife's family shows that he doesn't like his in-laws.
Pg. 71-105- "He tried another poem
and he called it 'absolutely nothing'
Because that's what it was really all about
And he gave himself an A
and a slash on each damned wrist
And he hung it on the bathroom door
because this time he didn't think
he could reach the kitchen"
(Chbosky, 72) I chose this as a strong section because it was the end of a poem that was a suicide note. Suicide is a really big thing and it's definitely something you cannot just ignore.
Pg. 106-140- "But after i said yes, and Mary Elizabeth announced it to the group, i wanted Sam to be jealous." I think that this was a powerful statement because it shows that Charlie does love Sam, but he is going with Mary Elizabeth because she asked him even though he really did want to go with Sam. (Chbosky, 112)
Pg. 141-175- "Basically, Brad's father caught Brad and Patrick together. I guess that Brad's father didn't know about his son because when he caught the, Brad's father starting beating Brad. Not a slap kind of beating. A belt kind. A real kind." (Chbosky, 146) I chose this as a surprising situation because Brad's father beat him for being gay. I think that is a bit of an overreaction. ;-;
Pg. 176-213- "When i fell asleep, i had this dream. My brother and my sister and I were watching television with my aunt Helen. Everything was in slow motion. The sound was thick. And she was doing what Sam was doing.And i didn't know what the hell was going on." (Chbosky, 203) I chose this as an important detail because his aunt Helen molested him and that's a major reason why Charlie had so many issues .
.
Figurative Language;
Simile; " It was one of those days that i didn't mind going to school because the weather was so pretty. The sky was over cast with clouds, and the air felt like a warm bath." This makes me think about going outside in the middle of the summer on a nice day where the warm air brushes against my face. It makes me feel like I'm at peace. I think the author wanted me to feel that way because that's what Charlie was feeling when he was going to school. He also felt that way when he came home and had to mow the lawn, but he didn't mind because he enjoyed looking at all of the different color trees and breathing in the summer air.
(Chbosky, 42)
Metaphor; "And in that moment, i swear we were infinite." This made me think about someone that I never ever want to lose. Like, someone I would always be into my life. I think the author wanted us to feel that was because that's how Charlie felt about his friends. He loved them so very much and dearly that he never wanted to lose them.
(Chbosky, 39)
Tone; The tone in this book changes a lot. Sometimes it's really serious or sad, then it gets really happy whenever he is with Sam and Patrick for example when they were riding in the car together listening to the tunnel song on the way back from a dance to a party.
